SSC CHSL Typing Test — Exam-Pattern Simulator

This is a free, exam-pattern SSC CHSL typing test. It runs for the full 10 minutes, disables Backspace exactly like the real DEST software, and grades you with the SSC full-mistake / half-mistake convention — so the net speed you see here is the number that actually decides whether you qualify.

Why this test matters

The SSC CHSL skill test trips up thousands of otherwise-qualified candidates every year, not because they type slowly, but because they practise on tools that let them backspace freely and count raw WPM. The real test does neither. With corrections locked, every uncorrected error permanently lowers your net speed, and SSC deducts a full mistake for a wrong or missing word and a half mistake for spacing, capitalisation and punctuation slips. Practising under those exact constraints is the only way to know your true exam-day number. This simulator reproduces the 10-minute window, the 35 WPM English requirement, the disabled Backspace, and the category-wise error tolerance, then tells you plainly whether you would have qualified.

How this test is scored

Your gross WPM is total key depressions ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. SSC then subtracts mistakes to get net WPM: each full mistake (wrong, missing, extra or misspelled word) costs 1, and each half mistake (spacing, capitalisation or punctuation) costs 0.5. You qualify only if your net speed clears 35 WPM and your error percentage stays within the limit for your category. Backspace and other edit keys are disabled, so accuracy on the first pass is everything.

Exam rules change each recruitment cycle. Always confirm speed, duration, error limits and backspace policy against the latest official notification before your exam.

Frequently asked questions

Is Backspace allowed in the SSC CHSL typing test?
No. SSC disables Backspace (and Delete/Cut/Copy/Paste/Undo) in the DEST/typing test, so you cannot correct mistakes. This simulator disables them too.
What is the qualifying speed for SSC CHSL?
The commonly cited requirement is 35 WPM in English and 30 WPM in Hindi over a 10-minute test, but always confirm the figure in the current official notification for your post.
How are mistakes counted?
SSC uses full mistakes (1.0) for wrong/missing/extra/misspelled words and half mistakes (0.5) for spacing, capitalisation and punctuation errors. Net speed = gross speed minus these.
Does the error limit depend on my category?
Yes. The permitted error percentage is typically higher for OBC/EWS and SC/ST candidates than for UR. Pick your category above before you start so the verdict applies the right limit.
Is this the official SSC test?
No — it is an independent practice simulator built to mirror the official pattern and scoring. Exam rules change each cycle; verify against the latest SSC notification.
